JOB DESCRIPTION
Microsoft’s legal team for the Advertiser and Publisher Solutions group has an opening for an experienced attorney to provide frontline support for the business and product development teams associated with Microsoft’s online search and display advertising businesses. A substantial portion of the role will involve managing international rollouts of Microsoft’s paid search and contextual advertising products. This attorney will also be in a position to help shape Microsoft’s approach to legal and policy issues in the online space, including data collection and retention, use of data for targeting purposes, and developing alternatives to the traditional advertising model. These areas all present a broad range of complex legal, regulatory, and policy issues, as well as opportunities for high-profile commercial transactions.
This position will work closely with the other legal professionals supporting Microsoft’s online advertising business, including the rest of the Advertiser and Publisher Solutions team, the Advertising Sales team, and the Search team, as well as the LCA teams providing corporate policy and regulatory support. The attorney must be an effective leader and model for cross-group collaboration, with special focus on identifying key cross-group deliverables and success metrics, and driving business results notwithstanding matrixed relationships. The position will be primarily located in Bellevue, Washington, but will allow the attorney to work with internal clients in Seattle, Redmond, and many of our international offices.
Key responsibilities will include:
Partnering with the business to define and execute strategies and solutions that support business, legal and policy initiatives.
Counseling and advising clients on a broad range of complex legal, business, and strategic issues, including issues related to data privacy, behavioral targeting, and international rollouts of Microsoft’s advertising platform.
“First chair” drafting and negotiating transactional documents with customers and partners.
Coordinating with internal and external legal and policy expert resources, as necessary, to help analyze and address legal and regulatory issues, and implement business and corporate strategies in the United States and internationally.
Driving process-related improvements to facilitate and increase the efficiency of the provision of business/commercial practices and legal services.
Successful candidates must have a J.D. from an ABA accredited law school, excellent academic credentials, and at least 5 years experience as a practicing attorney. They should have significant experience drafting and negotiating a broad variety of agreements concerning the development, distribution, licensing, or ownership of software and online services, related intellectual property, or other commercial goods or services. Strong experience with online advertising and international issues is a plus. They must also have excellent analytic, legal drafting and oral and written communication skills. They must possess a strong client service focus and the ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-dimensional projects in a fast-paced and uncertain environment. They must be effective in driving cross-group projects and collaborate well with colleagues.
Microsoft is an equal opportunity employer (EOE) and strongly supports diversity in the workplace.
