A 114 year old, well established, reputable, well managed company in Alpena, MI is seeking a new President to continue their legacy of strong growth and exceptional management. Alpena is a picturesque town located in Upper Michigan on Thunder Bay, Lake Huron. Relocation to this area is available for this position.

This is an employee-owned (ESOP) company, mid-sized ($80MM in annual revenues) who manufactures and sells products in the building materials industry. We are a manufacturer with multiple US and Canadian based locations and who's products are in use worldwide, in over 120 countries. This is a dynamic opportunity for the right candidate, someone ready to step up to the key leadership role, or an experienced executive looking for a new challenge.

The role as President reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for all facets of the business, sales, operations, HR, finance, etc. The President is tasked with providing strong, responsible leadership for the company by working with the board and other executives to establish short and long-term goals, plans and strategies. They are responsible for presiding over the entire workforce and they will manage budgets and make sure resources are allocated properly.

The President will make sure departments meet their individual goals and are responsible for overall accountability to the employee shareholders. In addition to being the face of the company, the person in the role of President must have an entrepreneurial mindset and adapt quickly to changes in the marketplace.

General Responsibilities also include:


  • Leadership - this is the essential responsibility in this role.
  • Oversee budgets, staff and other executives in the organization.
  • Work with board members to plan and implement a short-, mid- and long-term strategy for the company.
  • Meet with board members and other executives to assess the direction of the company and ensure it is in line with the company's stated mission.
  • Encourage business investment, act as a visionary and provide leadership for the company.
  • Oversee the complete operation of the company ensuring it operates and goals are met based on the direction established in the strategic plans.
  • Acts as the face of the company when dealing with state and local governments and the local community.

Skills and Experience Required


  • Must be a engage leader, someone that connects well with all levels of employee. This is not a position where you sit in the corner office and rule. Someone comfortable with engaging employees at their work space.
  • Proven executive leadership experience is essential.
  • No industry experience is required, a visionary, leader of people is most important. Someone who can plan, strategize and execute.
  • Superior communication skills, with the ability to communicate with board members, executives and frontline employees.
  • Financial and operational knowledge acumen.
  • Ability to attract, develop and retain top talent.
  • Have a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire people to action through their influence.
